Donald Trump vil fredag meddele Rusland, at USA trækker sig fra den såkaldte 'Åben Himmel-traktat'.

USAs præsident mener, at Rusland har misbrugt traktaten.

'Åben Himmel-traktaten' blev i 1992 underskrevet af 35 lande som en pagt mellem Nato og de daværende Warzawapagt-stater. Men nu har Trump planer om at trække USA ud af aftalen, ifølge The New York Times.

Pagten tillader nationerne at overflyve hinandens territorier med specielle sensorer, som viser, at der ikke er tale om en miltitær handling...

Trump administration prepares to leave Open Skies Treaty

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has made a final decision to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty, sources confirmed to Defense News on Thursday.

...“It was pretty clear from meetings that it was basically a done deal and it was just a matter of when,” one European source said.
Allies generally argue the treaty is a valuable channel for transparency and dialogue between Russia and the United States, the world’s top two nuclear superpowers. Critics of the treaty have argued that the U.S. gets better intelligence from satellite systems and that the funding to replace the aging OC-135 aircraft can be spent elsewhere...

Don’t leave Open Skies Treaty, top Democrats say

WASHINGTON — If President Donald Trump withdraws the U.S. from the Open Skies Treaty, it would “harm both U.S. and allied security interests,” two top Senate Democrats told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday....

...On Open Skies, however, a number of European nations have organized to encourage the Trump administration to stay a party to the treaty...

...“For the last 17 years, the United States has robustly utilized the treaty, overflying Russia nearly three times as often as Russia overflew the United States,” the senators wrote. “In addition, the treaty serves as a key confidence-building measure: for example, flights over Ukraine have demonstrated the United States’ commitment to European security and provide shareable and incontrovertible images of Russian aggression.”
